Rare and important Tikar mask. Cameroon. Like the Bamoun masks of the Grassland region, Tikar dance masks take the form of combs made of a sculpted human head, either solid or hollowed out with a logette, and ending in a cervical cylinder. A rattan frame is fitted around this cylinder, allowing the whole to be placed on the dancer's head, and a fiber skirt to hide it. Wood, plant fibers.
Works by Grassland Camerounais are among the most sought after among lovers of original African classical art, as they are imbued with the original African roots of tribes that came into contact with the Western world very late, at the beginning of the 20th century or at the very end of the 19th century.
