This mask (lipiko) is associated with initiation ceremonies among the Makonde. It is carved from a very light wood. It is always worn with a cloth draped over the mask and falling over the dancer’s shoulders and as part of an elaborate costume designed to completely conceal their identity. These helmet masks are carved with the face tilted upwards, with prominent eyes. The concave nose looks out onto oversized, parted lips through which filed teeth are visible.
