This mask is dated second half 20th century and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
All Dan masks are sacred. They are not representatives of the forest spirits, but they are precisely these spirits. Aesthetic constants: a protruding forehead, a thin nose, a mouth carved with precision. The Dan materializes the mask with a more or less idealized woman's or child's face.
This mask is the property of the Go Gé society and is worn exclusively when announcing the death of an important chief. Compared to other masks of this ethnic group, it is large in size, the hairstyle is also more complex and more decorated. This is a real funeral mask: it is the most sacred mask of the ethnic group.
